Quantum Layout and Audience Experience

I have been working on the layout for a museum that would explore the world of quantum physics. Here is a .pdf of the rough layout and audience experience as they navigate throughout the various sections of the museums.

CERN the game

Not the most exciting game, nor educational, but it’s on a similar path.

Plus Exploratorium, one the the greatest places on Earth, offers a cool site about CERN. The site is extremely dated(about 8 years) but once again it’s a good start to education of the public.

Main Objective: To create an environment that promotes new experiences and formation of new ideas. It is a space where learning is acquired by self-actualization. This could lead to the understanding of the underlying scientific principle, but could just be a new experience.

The Space: Participants must go through a tunnel to give the effect that they are entering another world. A world that is microscopic. They then are free to explore the space. The first thing they see from the tunnel is a small video. Curiosity will lead them to look closer, which will trip the video to stop and show something different. The closer they look the harder it is to see all the states.

They will also see their image in a fun house kinda of way through mirrors. This will represents the many worlds theory and will present a different reality.

There will be sign-age to the left with a video that tells you more. Basically the space promotes the ideas that close observation will not lead to greater understanding of the whole and that their could be many different realities which are all equally real.

Here is the floor plan:

The audience would go through a tunnel. At the end they would be greeted with a small video. The video would be an electron in multiple states (a blurry chaotic image.)

When the viewer tries to get close and observe the video, they break the laser and the video portrays a single state.

The viewer can continue to the left where they see a “house of mirror” effect and see themselves and the one state image.

The Cube

I recently have come across a favorite video of mine…no surprise it’s by Jim Henson, but it is something a little different then what people usually know him by. Henson did a brilliant film called the cube in the late 60s. Its only 50 minutes, and I highly recommend it.

This video brought me back to my main concept of creating a simply unique environment that can be taken many ways.

Visual Quantum Mechanics

I found a really cool page that offers computer visualizations on really complicated math. I don’t fully understand the connection between the math and the visualization, but the images are beautiful and do offer some base for relationship of images and color to the complex world of quantum mechanics.

I’m going to further explore how to implement these images.

Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter that make up everyday objects. A desk, the air, even you are made up of atoms!

Quantum Physics
The study of the atomic world
The word “quantum” came from the Latin word which means “how great” or “how much.”
(If classical mechanics governed the workings of an atom, electrons would rapidly travel towards and collide with the nucleus, making stable atoms impossible.) Move over mister Newton, something else is happening.

Atoms contain Electrons, which are in constant motion

When we try to observe them. Weird things happen contrary to our experiences of everyday. They display all possible options, but the natural world can only observe one. These experiences our explained by different theories through different perspectives.
What happens to all the potential?

Perspective 1) All possibilities are present and are equal real, it is only when we observe it, that we see only one. (Walk into a room with chaotic motion but when you step to close to look it stops, and reveals something entirely different then what you thought) Conflation occurs when the identities of two or more individuals, concepts, or places, sharing some characteristics of one another, become confused until there seems to be only a single identity. –Observer conflict

Perspective 2) What you observer there is another you for all the other possibilities. (This could be displayed with the viewer displayed on the wall also with different perspectives (angles) of the viewer) –Environment conflict

Perspective 3) “God doesn’t play dice” Objective Collapse- There is a hidden variable where all states reach an end due to a pre-deterministic objective (the experience just ends randomly, predetermined) –The God Conflict

*Quantum mechanics provides probabilistic results because the physical universe is itself probabilistic rather than deterministic.

Why do I care?
• Can we ever clearly observe something?
• How does my perspective on life change how I see the world?
• Can there be multiple universes?
• Can we harness those potentials to create great forces of energy?
